Featured snippets (the highlighted answer boxes that appear at the top of many Google search results) are one of the highest-value organic real estate positions available in search. They appear above all other organic results, they are the primary answer source for voice queries, and they generate significantly higher click-through rates than standard organic positions for many query types.

For South African businesses competing in informational and commercial-intent searches, consistently winning featured snippets in your topic area is a meaningful competitive advantage.

What Featured Snippets Are and How They Work

When Google determines that a search query has a clear, direct answer, it often displays a Featured Snippet at the top of the results page, a box containing a paragraph, list, or table extracted directly from a web page, with the source URL below. The page providing the snippet does not need to rank in position one; Google selects the snippet based on how well the page’s content directly and concisely answers the query.

Featured snippets are more common for certain query types: “how to” questions, “what is” definitions, comparisons (“X vs Y”), and step-by-step processes. They are less common for navigational queries (“Gmail login”) and transactional queries (“buy running shoes Cape Town”), where Google prioritises commercial results.

In South Africa, featured snippets appear for SA-specific queries just as they do globally. A query like “how does load shedding affect SEO performance” or “what is the difference between SEO and SEM in South Africa” can generate a snippet that your page could occupy.

How to Identify Snippet Opportunities

The fastest way to find featured snippet opportunities is to identify queries in your topic area that currently show a snippet from a competitor (or a weak source), combined with a search for queries you currently rank for on page one but do not hold the snippet.

In Ahrefs, use the Keywords Explorer with the “Featured snippet” SERP feature filter. For your target keywords, this shows you which ones trigger featured snippets and who currently holds them. Any snippet held by a weak source (a page with low topical authority, outdated content, or a poorly structured answer) is a target you can compete for.

In Google Search Console, find queries where you rank in the top five but do not hold the snippet. These are your highest-priority targets: you already have sufficient authority for the query, and optimising the structure of your answer is often enough to win the snippet.

Writing Content That Wins Snippets

The structure of your answer matters as much as the content.

For paragraph snippets (the most common type), Google is looking for a direct, concise answer that is typically between 40 and 60 words. Write a short, complete answer to the question directly, starting with a restatement of the question concept. For a query like “what is topical authority in SEO,” the snippet-winning paragraph starts with “Topical authority is…” and delivers the complete core answer in two to four sentences.

For list snippets, Google extracts numbered or bulleted lists from pages. Format your step-by-step processes and enumerable points as proper HTML ordered or unordered lists. Use clear, action-oriented language for each list item. Keep each item concise, one to two lines.

For table snippets, Google extracts comparison tables or data tables. Mark up comparison content in proper HTML table format, with clear column headers and clean data organisation.

The inverted pyramid principle applies directly to snippet optimisation: lead with the direct answer at the top of each section, then expand with context and explanation below. Google’s snippet extraction tends to pull from the first sentence or sentences of a section, so if that first sentence is a complete, direct answer to the query, your snippet chances improve significantly.

Optimising Heading Structure for Snippet Targeting

When a question is the target of a snippet, framing your H2 or H3 heading as the exact question (or close to it) and then answering it directly in the following paragraph is the most reliable snippet optimisation technique.

If you are targeting the query “how long does SEO take in South Africa,” your content should include a heading like “How Long Does SEO Take for South African Businesses?” followed immediately by a direct, 40-to-60-word answer. Google reads this pattern clearly.

Schema Markup to Support Snippet Eligibility

FAQ schema marks up question-and-answer pairs in a way that is specifically designed to support snippet extraction. For pages with explicit FAQ sections, implementing FAQPage schema tells Google that your content contains direct answers to specific questions, improving your eligibility for snippet selection.

HowTo schema, applied to step-by-step instructional content, similarly signals to Google that your content is structured for snippet extraction for “how to” queries.
